Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How many service hours do I receive per card?
A: Students frequently ask this question. However, CFHK does not have a formula in which a certain number of cards equals a certain number of service hours. The reason for this is everyone is different, and has their own creativity and artistic skills. Therefore, people typically spend different lengths of time making each individual card.
Q: How are service hours calculated?
A: CFHK awards the number of service hours solely based on how much time the student spent making cards for CFHK.
Q: Can I download a PDF version of the Card-Making Guidelines graphic above?
A: Yes, you can download the PDF version here.
Q: Can you verify service hours electronically?
A: Absolutely! CFHK regularly verifies service hours electronically via programs such as Mobile Serve, X2VOL, etc.. The student can have the verification request sent to: [email protected]. The student still must submit photos of their cards and a time log to CFHK in order for CFHK to process the electronic verification request.
Q: Is CFHK a President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) certifying organization?
A: Yes, CFHK is a PVSA certifying nonprofit. We are happy to assist students and volunteers with earning the PVSA for volunteering.
Q: What is the process for long-term volunteering?
A: If you are seeking to make cards for CFHK as part of a long-term volunteer project (such as: for a school course, Eagle Scout Project, etc), you can absolutely do so! Please include this in your cover letter so our team can keep track of your hours over time. You can also email CFHK to keep us up to date if you wish to do so as you complete your service.
Q: Is a cover letter required?
A: Yes. Students must include a cover letter, with their cards, stating their service request and the details of the service request. Unless a student does this, there is no way for CFHK to know the cards are related to a service request. Cover letters, requesting service hours, must be mailed with the cards and cannot be sent via email.
Q: What do I need to include in my cover letter?
A: There is no specific required. The student just needs to state their service hours request, the number of hours requested, whether they'd like to receive their service letter / form via email and/or mail, etc. The cover letter should be sent in with the cards. If the student does not include a cover letter mentioning the service request, there is no way for the CFHK team to know it's related to a service request.
Q: How do I keep track of the time I spend making cards?
A: As you make cards, you can keep track of the start time and the ending time as well as the date. We suggest keeping a list or log of the information.
Q: Is a time-log required?
A: It is helpful to include a time-log or list of the dates you made cards and time spent. You can include this with your cover letter. In our experience, keeping a time log makes the process easier for student as well. We suggest maintaining a time-log or list throughout the card-making process (including the date, start time and finish time).
Q: Can I request my service hours via email instead?
A: Effective July 2023, CFHK now requires a cover letter to be sent with the cards in order to award service hours. Students should plan in advance to allow adequate time for their cards to be mailed and delivered to CFHK. However, we understand that mail delays or other circumstances can happen. As such, if a student needs to request verification of service hours prior to the cards being delivered to CFHK, they can submit their request, along with photos of their cards, via email at [email protected] (It's best to photograph both the front + inside of the cards--either individually or as a group). Please also include a tracking number or confirmation of shipment of the cards to CFHK (if available). Depending on the request, CFHK may be able to verify via email or may need to wait for the cards to be delivered to CFHK.
Q: Do I need to contact CFHK before I send cards to let them know I am requesting service hours?
A: No, that isn't required.
